What Hung on the Walls That Are Gone
Wall Decor & Art

Some of the villas these pieces came from no longer stand. What survives — the mirrors, the framed works, the gilded panels — is often the only remaining evidence of a room's original proportions and taste. We do not always know every hand that painted or framed each piece. We know where it hung, and for how long, and that someone thought it worth saving when so much else was let go.

Did You Know? Many of Cairo's Khedivial-era mirrors were manufactured by the Saint-Gobain glassworks in France — the same company that produced the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Several matched pairs from this lineage survive in Egyptian private collections today.
