The Gramophone Still Plays
Musical Instruments

Cairo's golden age had a soundtrack, and some of its instruments survive to prove it — gramophones, music boxes, the occasional piano that has outlived three owners and two renovations. These are not silent objects. Most still function, still hold the particular warmth of pre-digital sound, still sound exactly like the era this whole collection is trying to remember.

Did You Know? The gramophone was first demonstrated in Cairo in 1903, barely a decade after its invention — making Egypt one of the earliest markets outside Europe and America to adopt recorded sound commercially.
